Community Garden Meeting

  • Kelvn Park Fieldhouse

We are happy to report that Neighbor-Space has received the deed for the community garden this week. We'll be able to hit the ground running on this project in the spring. The space will include the corner as well as the land behind the building, so we'll be able to stick with the community's vision to separate the vegetable garden and have more passive space.

Our first planning meeting for the year will be

Date: Wednesday, March 15, 2017
Time: 6:00-7:00PM
Where: Kelvyn Park Fieldhouse, 4438 W Wrightwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60639

Background:
HNA is working with Neighbor-Space as a partner in aiding the development process for the community garden at Kilpatrick and Parker.

A developer is building a planned community, called Schubert Place, at Knox and Schubert. It's a 84 unit proposed apartment complex with 101 parking spaces.

The developer is required by their planned development agreement to set aside some community space. It will set aside 10,000-11,000 square feet of space (4 city lots) to the community in the form of a community green space.

In previous meetings we had decided we wanted to see the following in a community garden:

Senior safe
Walking path
Gazebo and benches
Wheelchair accessible
Safe and well-lit grounds (sight lines unencumbered)
Sustained community engagement with the space
Engage nearby neighborhood schools
Clean and well maintained grounds
Park rules, potentially enclose the space w/ a fence and lock at night
Veggie/garden beds
Beehives

About

President Trump has pushed forward executive orders targeting the immigrant community. These executive orders are founded on incorrect, misleading, and xenophobic rhetoric. Due to this, 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Rosa, the Hermosa Neighborhood Association and United Neighbors of the 35th Ward have teamed up to have a special meeting to help learn how we can defend our Hermosan neighbors.

We'll be having an Immigration 101 community meeting to answer some of your questions followed by a short Know Your Rights training. Come learn about ways to get involved in the movement to support our immigrant neighbors.

*Please note that the workshop is not intended to answer legal questions pertaining to individual immigration cases. If you need to speak with an attorney contact the National Immigrant Justice Center at (312) 660-1370.
